Coordination drawings are used to show how different building systems fit together in the same space and how they interact with each other. They’re about resolving spatial conflicts and ensuring that architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing elements can coexist without clashes. Think of them as a cross-ddiscipline plan that helps teams coordinate layouts, routing, and clearances early in the design or BIM process.

Shop drawings, on the other hand, are produced by contractors or fabricators to translate the design intent into fabrication and installation instructions. They provide exact dimensions, materials, connections, fasteners, finishes, and any field modifications needed to manufacture and install components. These drawings guide the actual construction work and are often reviewed for conformance with the design documents.

It’s not accurate to say one type is exclusive to architecture and the other to engineering. Coordination drawings can involve multiple disciplines, and shop drawings can be produced for many trades, including architectural elements like doors or millwork.
